Newly Crowned M Net Face of Africa Lukundo Nalungwe is in New York, USA to take part in the New York fashion week, perhaps the most happening event in the industry and the dream for any aspiring model.
With a whole promising career ahead of her, Lukundo, who stunned the continent last Saturday by emerging winner against all the expectations, will use the fashion week to further enhance her credentials.
But make no mistake; she will not be overwhelmed by the occasion. When others including the more than 100 media that was covering the Face of Africa Finals at the Eko Hotel and Suites on Victoria Island in Lagos, gave her no chance, she told the Zambian Press that she believes that she is among the best when it comes to the catwalk among all the finalists.
Only Rosanna Hall, the Zimbabwean contestant, and her best friend in the group who was also in the top three knew of Lukundos potential. Anyhow, now she is at the New York Fashion Show, sponsored by Mercedes Benz where designers produce fashion shows to show off their latest collections.
The event is in Bryant Park, an eight acre park that is converted to a temporary fashion arena with tents. The Fashion Week tents are huge, air conditioned and contain several venues for the designers to show their collections.
The individual venues ranging up to almost 12,000 square feet come complete with runway, seating for attendees, backstage areas, lighting and sound. Some fashion designers choose to have their collections shown in showrooms or other off-site venues during the week.
The fashion shows are attended by journalists, editors, buyers and celebrities. They are an excellent opportunity for American (and a few international) designers ranging from Oscar de la Renta to Zac Posen -to show off their upcoming collections.
