Betty Kaunda is an Icon of Hope - Thandiwe
FIRST Lady Thandiwe Banda has described Betty Kaunda, wife of the first Republican president, Kenneth Kaunda, as an icon of hope, which all Zambian women should emulate for her role she played in liberating Zambia from colonial bondage.
Mrs Banda said Mama Betty was one of Zambia's largely unsung yet foremost freedom fighters and national builders who deserved to be honoured by the young generation.
She said this on Tuesday in Kafue during the official launch of Lawrence Sikutwa and Associates (LSA)'s Lady Betty cruise boat at Kafue river cliff.
The commissioning of Lady Betty, a luxury cruise boat bestowed in honour of Betty Kaunda, for her outstanding role in the country's liberation struggle attracted dignitaries including Dr Kaunda, Government officials and some members of the diplomatic corps.
"Mama Betty Kaunda's role is an accurate example and vivid definition of the sacrifices and steadfastness of women in the face of uncertainties as it was, by no means, clear that the objective of our nationalist fighters would be achieved," she said.
She said although a small token, naming the boat after Mama Betty Kaunda was an important appreciation and commemoration of the priceless role that she played in the struggle for independence and the subsequent building of what became a new Zambia.
Mrs Banda described Mama Betty Kaunda's sacrifice in supporting her husband, Dr Kaunda, during the independence struggle as an exemplary behaviour of a wife who remained steadfast to keep the family united in difficult times.
In a speech read for her by her great grand daughter, Rebecca Kaunda, Mama Betty Kaunda called for concerted efforts from all Zambians to liberate the country socially and economically.
"I view it as an honour bestowed not only on me but also on those mothers and grandmothers who selflessly contributed to our freedom struggle," she said.
She said on the young generation to be patriotic by believing in the principle of collective responsibility to achieve shared objectives.
LSA group of companies chairperson, Lawrence Sikutwa said the introduction of Lady Betty was part of the first phase of a four-star $12 million hotel project the LSA group was putting up at Kafue river cliff.
