Divas Night Set For Lusaka's Smugglers Inn

Tuesday 2nd March, 2010

THE Divas Nite, which has traditionally been held to coincide with the International Women's Day, will this year take place on March 8 at the Smugglers Inn (formerly London Bus) in Lusaka.

This year's show will have Angela Nyirenda, Sista D, Mampi and Alice Chali of the Amayenge Asoza fame. Other than that, Faye Fashion designs will showcase some of their collections.

Sista D, who confirmed the show to Times Entertainment in Lusaka, says the much-anticipated event on International Women's Day other than the road match, will start at 19:30 hours with charges pegged at K50,000 per person.

The award-winning female performer said, as usual, a certain percentage from the proceeds would be donated to a certain institution that is looking after pregnant girls.

"Whoever buys a ticket is contributing to sending these girls back to school, because they're supposed to go back to school after giving birth. This is in line with the theme which is 'equal rights, equal opportunities for all, progress for all'.

"But other than that, the International Women's Day is just about celebrating being a woman. We also want to emphasise that we want to see more men in the audience, because gender is about partnerships," she said in an interview.

The Divas night has come a long way with this year's being the sixth consecutive to run alongside the International Women's Day. It has become a permanent feature on the music calender every year, providing a rare moment for the working woman to go out and have fun without any strong reservations.

And the divas do not want to disappoint the working woman as they are promising a good show, with all the performers playing live music.

A poster for the Diva's show uploaded on the global social networking website face book elicited some comments that can only be interpreted to mean that it left those that saw it salivating.

And you cannot blame them; the Divas Night has grown considerably from the time it started at the Polo Grill with Sista D, Jane Osborne and Maureen Lilanda. But even with its growth, the quality of performances has always been maintained if not enhanced whether it is featuring other divas like Alice Chuma, Shatel, the Mwale Sisters or indeed the Amashiwi as it happened in 2008 when it was held at the Lusaka Playhouse.

All things being equal, nothing should stop the divas from giving their audience a performance worth their money and time.
